Cause For Celebration: Heinz Frei
As part of our Cause for Celebration series presented by PNC, we are highlighting the triumphs of athletes with disabilities who have reshaped sport through longevity, versatility, and excellence. This week, we celebrate Heinz Frei.
After becoming paraplegic in a 1978 accident, the Swiss legend built one of the most remarkable careers in Paralympic history across wheelchair racing, handcycling, and cross-country sit-skiing. Frei earned 15 Paralympic gold medals and even competed in both Summer and Winter Paralpic Games, showcasing extraordinary endurance and versatility.
Decades into his career, he was still winning medals, earning a Paralympic silver at age 63 and holding marathon world records for over two decades.
Today, we celebrate a true legend whose lifelong dedication continues to inspire athletes everywhere.
